Thanksgiving Kitchen Safety, Independent Alarm

With the holiday season quickly approaching, it’s important to observe some fire safety rules for staying safe in the kitchen.  More fires start in the kitchen than anywhere else in the house and on Thanksgiving there are three times more house fires than any other day of the year, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.  We’ve compiled some common sense tips for keeping yourself and your family safe and the holiday filled with joy.

  1. Don’t wear loose clothing around open flames.
  2. Don’t leave the kitchen while food is cooking on the stove top or leave the home while the turkey is in the oven.
  3. If deep frying your bird, do it outside!
  4. DO NOT POUR WATER ON A GREASE FIRE!  Turn off the heat source, attempt to remove oxygen from the flame by covering it with the lid to another pan or a baking sheet or dump baking soda on it…LOTS of baking soda!
  5. Make sure children stay away from hot foods and liquids.  You might not realize it, but steam can cause serious burns.  Have activities that keep kids out of the kitchen.  Games, puzzles or books can occupy them well.  Get kids involved in preparations with recipes that can be done outside of the kitchen or ahead of time, before your cooking begins
  6. Leave matches and lighters in a secure place.
  7. NEVER leave children alone in a room with a lit candle.
  8. Store fire extinguishers in plain sight and near an exit – not under the sink, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Because fires can double every five to 10 seconds – and can consume a room in just one minute – call 911 first.
  9. Make sure your smoke alarms are in good working condition…we can never stress that enough!
