Christmas Safety Tips for a Happy Holiday

As you decorate for the holidays this year, think about safety. While it is easy to get distracted and cause an accident or fire, following these Christmas Safety tips can ensure a safe and healthy holiday season.

  • Choose a tree with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched.  Water live trees daily.
  • Before placing the tree in the stand, cut 2” from the base of the trunk.
  • Make sure the tree is at least 3 feet away from any heat source like fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights.
  • Don’t place the tree in front of exits.
  • Use lights that have the label of a recognized laboratory.  Some lights are for either indoor or outdoor only.
  • Replace any string of lights that are worn or broken or have loose bulb connections.  Connect NO MORE THAN 3 strands of mini lights together and a MAXIMUM of 50 light bulbs for screw-in light strands.  Read the manufacturer’s instructions for the number of LED light strands that can be connected together.
  • NEVER use lit candles to decorate the tree.
  • Always turn off ALL Christmas lights before going to bed or leaving the home.

  • When hanging outdoor lights, keep electrical connectors off the ground and away from metal rain gutters. Use insulated tape or plastic clips instead of metal nails or tacks to hold them in place.
  • When using a ladder to install decorations, make sure it is stable. Have someone hold the bottom if possible.

  • Never leave burning candles unattended or sleep in a room with a lit candle.
  • Keep candles out of reach of children.
  • Make sure candles are on stable surfaces.
  • Don’t burn candles near trees, curtains or any other flammable items.
  • Don’t burn trees, wreaths or wrapping paper in the fireplace.
  • Check and clean your chimney and fireplace area at least once a year.
  • Do not use your gas fireplace if the glass panel is removed, cracked, or broken, and only allow a qualified service person to replace fireplace parts.
  • Test your smoke alarms monthly to make sure they work, and be sure to install smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms on every level of your home, especially near sleeping areas.
